On 21 November 2023, the TES Cluster—a collaboration of the EU-funded projects ECHO, Best-Storage, HYSTORE, and ThumbsUp—hosted a webinar titled “EU Regulatory Landscape for Thermal Energy Storage”. The session explored how harmonised regulations can overcome barriers and accelerate the adoption of Thermal Energy Storage (TES) across Europe.
Key Highlights
TES plays a vital role in integrating renewable energy with technologies like heat pumps, ensuring a steady supply of clean energy and supporting Europe’s decarbonisation goals. However, fragmented regulations at EU and national levels present challenges to its deployment.
- Thomas Schleker (European Commission) highlighted EU efforts to boost TES adoption, including recommendations to address capacity needs, financing gaps, and regulatory hurdles.
- Guillermo Andrés Nieto (Veolia Spain) stressed the need for harmonised design and safety guidelines, citing Spain’s regulatory gaps as a key example.
- Karla Zambrano (University of Valencia) focused on TES’s social impact, noting its potential to combat energy poverty and make energy systems more affordable for vulnerable households.
